Gay web series is helping change attitudes towards LGBT people in Vietnam
This is how the internet is changing the world.
Vietnamese broadcasters wouldn’t touch ‘My Best Gay Friends’ with a proverbial bargepole, but that hasn’t stopped it becoming an online hit with between 1-2million viewers per episode.
Creator and director Huynh Nguyen Dang Khoa wanted to create the series to respond to poor representation of gay people in Vietnam. He says “[the media] were just making fun of us. It was very distorted”. After initially targeting the series at the LGBT community, Khoa notes that the series has become successful with a wider audience and that its success and appeal are changing attitudes towards LGBT people in Vietnam.
The series is, of course, in Vietnamese, so you all you bilingual folks, click here to view the first episode. Or just have a look if you’re curious. :)
Khoa plans to start work on a musical series in October and has proved you don’t need to rely on big networks to find success in today’s TV industry.
